About Portman Square Park
Portman Square is the everyday park for Lakeside and Lester Park, the one that carries the neighborhood's youth sports rather than its scenery. Ball fields and a playground handle the summer; outdoor hockey rinks and the adjacent Portman Community Center handle the long winter, with lights on most evenings from December through February.
Its role in the neighborhood is social as much as recreational. Youth hockey and baseball programs run out of it, which makes it the place east-side families see each other most consistently outside of school, and the rinks are open-skate ground for anyone once organized practices clear.
This is a facility park, not a nature park. If you want trails and moving water, Lester Park is a few minutes east and the Lakewalk is a few blocks down the hill. If you want a rink, a field, and a place to drop a kid for two hours, this is the one.
Good to know: ball fields, outdoor hockey rinks, playground, community center, youth sports programs.
