About Park Point Recreation Area
The Park Point Recreation Area sits at the far end of Minnesota Avenue, at the tip of the developed portion of the world's longest freshwater sandbar. It is Duluth's real beach: soft Lake Superior sand, dunes, and open water in a city where most of the shoreline is rock.
The park holds ball fields, a playground, picnic areas, and a boat launch alongside the beach itself, with seasonal lifeguards during the short swimming window. Beyond the developed area, a trail runs out through an old-growth pine forest toward the ruins of the original 1858 lighthouse and the tip of the point, which is one of the better birding walks in the region during spring and fall migration.
Two honest cautions. Lake Superior is cold enough to be genuinely dangerous even in August, and rip currents near the ship canal are a real hazard. And on a hot July weekend the beach draws the whole city across a single lift bridge, which is the source of Park Point's defining traffic problem.
