About Brighton Beach (Kitchi Gammi Park)
Brighton Beach, officially Kitchi Gammi Park, is the cobble-stone shoreline park at Duluth's northeastern edge, just past the mouth of the Lester River. It is where the Lakewalk ends and the North Shore begins, and it is the city's best place to sit in a car or on a rock and watch Lake Superior do whatever it is doing that day.
The park reopened in October 2024 after a multi-year reconstruction driven by repeated storm damage and shoreline erosion. The work had four parts: relocating and rebuilding the shore road away from the water, stabilizing the shoreline, improving access to the beach, and rebuilding the landscaping and amenities with more resilient, native planting (City of Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). New restrooms, picnic sites, and ADA-accessible routes came with it.
Use runs year-round and skews toward the elemental: sunrise watching, storm watching in November, ice formations in January, and agate hunting on the cobble in summer. There is no swimming beach in any conventional sense. The water is cold enough to be dangerous and the rocks are slick when wet.
