About Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve
The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve is the research, education, and stewardship organization for the St. Louis River estuary, the largest freshwater estuary on the Great Lakes and the water body that both Duluth and Superior are built around.
Its public-facing home is the Estuarium on Barker's Island in Superior, which is the best place in the Twin Ports to understand what the harbor actually is: a drowned river mouth behind a sandbar, with a habitat and pollution-recovery history that shapes everything from fishing to development permitting.
For residents on either side of the harbor, the reserve's programming is the most accessible route into the science of the place.
